What is tooth decay ?

Tooth decay means the destruction of the enamel by acid producing bacteria in reaction with the food particles or plaque. It starts with a soft spot or demineralization , or black spots then eventually getting into deeper layers and reaching pulp which causes sensitivity and pain.

Early signs of dental caries !

  1. White spots or chalky patches.
  2. Sensitivity to cold , hot or sweets.
  3. Discoloration.
  4. Rough or sticky surfaces.
  5. Food getting stuck in the cavity.
  6. Bad breath.

Do all cavity need filling?

Initial caries can be handled by

  1. Fluoride therapy.
  2. Remineralizing agents.
  3. Improved oral hygiene.
  4. Dietry changes.

Once the cavity reaches enamel and dentine the only choice is to get in filled to avoid further complication.

If neglected in initial stages, it can lead to,

  1. Larger cavity.
  2. Root canal treatment.
  3. Sometimes tooth loss.
