What is Gingival recession?
It happens when the gum is pulled downwards and exposes your root of the tooth making it appearing longer and can eventually lead to caries and mobility.
Causes of Gum recession
- Very poor oral hygiene
- Using of hard brush and brushing vigorously
- Smoking and tobacco chewing habits
- Underlying gum diseases
- Bruxism and maligned teeth
Treatment
- Scaling and Root planing - deep cleaning of the calculus and plaque and also smoothening the exposed pulp which helps to reattach the gums.
- Pinhole technique - it's the method of loosening the gum and reattaching which is a minimal invasive method .
- Gum grafting - where a healthy gums can be taken from the mouth or a donar and covering the exposed area.
- Desensitizing and fillings - the exposed root can cause sensitivity and to protect we give fillings and appropriate treatment.
Preventions
- Use soft toothbrush and gently brush your teeth , no vigorously brushing.
- Have regular dental checkups
- If teeth grinding is present, consult and get night guards.
- Quit smoking.
